A young surfer is caught between his dominating surfing master and his passion for a mysterious female Maori tattooist. Driven by his desire to be tattooed and ‘become a man’, he ignores warnings that she could in fact be “Hine Nui Te Po”, the Maori Sea Goddess of Death. Drawn ever deeper into her ambiguous world of pleasure, pain, fantasy and reality, the young surfer must face death in order to understand life. A dangerous, erotic journey of initiation through surf, sex, and the ritual art of Maori tattoo.
