23-year-old Jack Flange is a city boy who has taken a job on an oyster farm on the Hawkesbury River in order to be closer to his sister who is recovering in hospital after being injured in a car crash. In a desperate bid to find money for her hospital bills, Jack robs the Sydney fish markets and posts the proceeds to himself upriver. But the package goes missing after the local postman has a heart attack while doing his deliveries. As he tries to recover the money, Jack immerses himself in the lives and secrets of the members of the secluded community: Brownie, Jack's troubled boss, his wife Trish, an "oyster whisperer", who has left him, Brownie's eccentric father Mumbles, Vietnam vet turned hermit Skippy, and Pearl, a girl with a reputation, to whom Jack finds himself irresistibly attracted. Through these characters, Jack starts to get a different perspective on life, the river, and oyster farming, until he discovers where his money has gone
