Saint-Tropez and the Antipodes, cinema as an invitation to travel.
A glance at the poster of the 2010 festival and the journey to the other end of the world has already begun. Its jetty diving into the ocean invites us to an exploration of the South Pacific. It also holds the promise of other universes, landscapes, emotions, and feelings, of many cinematographical pleasures resulting from an immersion in an original visual maelstrom and in a multitude of dense, funny, dramatic, or fantastic stories that are as different as they are thrilling.
It incites us to don explorers’ garments, as did many seamen who sailed the Southern seas and scattered so many French names on this Terra Australis (Geographe Bay, Naturaliste Reef, Cape Mentelle, Esperance…), and even in New Zealand where a few French street names are still to be found in Okaroa (Port Louis-Philippe).
Unlike what happens in the rest of the world, Australian and New Zealand cinema has never been so buoyant, and no less than four films have already opened on French screens this year (« Bright Star », « Disgrace », « Daybreakers », « The Tree »).
I hope to see you in Saint-Tropez for a 12th edition of the Rencontres Internationales du Cinéma des Antipodes that will, once again, go hand in hand with diversity, originality, harshness, poetry, humour, sensitivity, discovery, and wide open spaces.
